EI like to use choice boards during the 2nd half of a unit or as a 2-3 day review. Choice boards give reluctant students a say in what they have to do and they can also provide opportunities for enrichment and intervention. I have setup my board using several methods. Students have had free choice of a specified number of activities on the board. Students have had to choice a number of activities off the board that are touching each other (Tic-Tac-Toe), and students have had to select an activity from each row (Each row representing a different level of difficulty or a different topic.)
Most students do well with choice boards. For online activities, partner activities, games, or flash cards, I always make sure they get their board intitaled by me to verify it was completed since there are not paper copies of these. Students staple paper copies to the board as they finish. I give them the option of checking with me at the end of each activity or bringing it all to me when they are finished. This gives struggling students the chance to get help as they work an more advanced students can just work until they're done. For the students that do not stay on task or do not want to complete the board, I have seats at my kidney table near me where they can work and I can monitor their progress. Sometimes I even select the activities for them based on their needs. There have been times where I have had to set deadlines for these students using a timer and coming to my room during their study hall or lunch is a consequence of wasting time.
