If you are familiar with the Everyday Math program by the University of Chicago Mathematics Project, then you will see my inspiration for my science boxes. Science boxes are spiraling cumulative review that I use across the course of a full year. I will admit, the content of the science boxes is not original to me. Most of the content within the science boxes is released test questions from the 5th and 8th grade Ohio Achievement Test. I have also used released questions from states with similar standards as Ohio. I pulled questions from these tests that pertained to the content of my grade level and i arranged the content into a spiral review series. I assign one Science Boxes worksheet per week. I give students 2 days to complete it. They don't need that long, but I encourage them to use the extra time to research or look back in their notes for information on questions they may have forgotten. It try to give a random incentive to students who can prove they used the time to look something up. The extra day also gives students a chance to ask me or another teacher for help. The Science Boxes are not overly difficult and most of the questions are current with the topic in class; its the review questions from other concepts that tend to throw off students. Seeing content over and over even after the unit/chapter is complete really helps keep the information usable in my students minds. I have experienced great results using these in both 5th and 7th grade science. I have even shared them with several colleagues. You can buy my complete 5th grade set as well as some of the 7th grade set on Teachers Pay Teachers. As this is only my 2nd year with 7th grade, I need to modify some of them before posting the whole set.
